Marc Spector was born in Chicago to a rabbi. He grew to become a heavyweight boxer, US Marine, and a mercenary. He becomes a skilled combatant and befriends the French pilot Jean-Paul DuChamp, whom he calls "Frenchie." While working for the African mercenary Raoul Bushman in Egypt, the group stumbles upon an archaeological dig whose crew includes Dr. Peter Alraune and his daughter Marlene. The dig had uncovered an ancient temple where artifacts included a statue of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. Intent on looting the dig, Bushman kills Dr. Alraune. In response to Alraune's murder, Spector challenges Bushman to personal combat but is beaten nearly to death and left to die in the sub-zero temperatures of the desert night. Roaming Egyptians took pity on the dying Spector, and took him to a shrine of Khonshu, the god of the moon and vengence. The god came to Spector in a vision, and promised to give him a second chance at life, in return for serving as his avatar.

Spector agreed, and became Moon Knight. To protect himself from the darkness of his mercenary past, Spector created other identities to hide behind, including Steven Grant (a millionaire entrepreneur) and Jake Lockley (a taxi driver). Moon Knight typically stays on the street level of crime, despite being a member of both the West Coast Avengers, as well as the Secret Avengers. Moon Knight is known for being incredibly violent, never hestitating to kill enemies if the situation called for it.

In recent history, Spector has also created multiple masked personas for himself. While Moon Knight is the supernatural mercenary, "Mr. Knight" is dressed in a white suit, mask, and gloves, and deals with the polices to handle street thugs. In his own words, Spector wears all white for his costumes because he "wants people to see him coming."

Being Khonshu's right hand man comes with perks. Spector has gained enhanced strength, endurance, and reflexes at night, reaching his pinnacle during a full moon, and sometimes has prophetic visions. In addition to these, Spector has a wide set of skills from his days as a US Marine and mercenary. This include being a skilled boxer, commando, martial artist, acrobat, gymnast and pilot. His multiple identities grant him resistance to some psychic assaults.

But, it's not all sunshine and roses when you are a servent of an Egyptian god of vengence. Moon Knight's multiple identies have reaked havoc on his mental stability, causing him to clearly develop dissociative identity disorder (formerly known as "multiple personalities"). He lapses between his 3 civilian identities, and his 2 costumed identities, among others. This has caused many issues for him, as well as many interesting story arcs.

Finally, lets look at some interesting trivia:

  • Moon Knight had personalities of other heroes, including Captain America, Wolverine, and Spider-Man
  • Taskmaster, a villain who can copy anyone's moves just by watching, has said that he would rather not copy Moon Knight's moves, because he would rather take a punch than dodge it
  • Moon Knight's cape contains adatmantium, the same metal as Wolverine's skeleton
