Tony Stark, son of Howard and Maria, is arguably one of the smartest characters in the Marvel Universe, boasting multiple PhDs in physics, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. It is this mass intellect that allowed Stark to create the suit of armor that grants him the ability to fight alongside the Avengers.
Tony created the first prototype of this armor (dubbed the Mark I) when visiting Afghanistan to supervise the testing of a weapon his company, Stark Industries, was creating. During this trip, Stark was taken hostage by terrorists, and forced to build a weapon for the group in exchange for his life. An important feature of this armor was an electronic device that kept shrapnel away from his heart, which was there as a result of his abduction. Stark escaped, and further refined his armor, eventually using it for justice.
Before delving too deep into Stark as Iron Man, it is important to understand Stark as an ordinary man. Tony is incredibly driven, intelligent, and successful. His high level of success has led to him developing a level of arrogance and sarcasm, which, in turn, has lead to many conflicts between Stark and his fellow teammates. Stark has also fought alcoholism through much of his life, to the point where this once resulted in his being removed from the Avengers. While this is usually dealt with, recently Tony has began drinking again.
Iron Man has many suits at his disposal to meet many different situations. Some of his most notable are the Mark II, the Hulkbuster, the Stealth Armor, and the current armor, Model 50. The benefits granted by these armors vary greatly, but several aspects remain the same. The suits grant Stark sustained flight, superhuman strength (he once put down a raging She-Hulk with a single punch), superhuman speed (he has outmaneuvered Spider-Man and the Human Torch), repulsor rays, missiles, and a telepathic blocker (giving him immunity from mind control).
Iron Man also has an extensive rogues gallery, which is partially built by his being a part of the Avengers. These villians include Thanos, Dr. Doom, Kang, Mandarin, Taskmaster, and Fin Fang Foom.
- Tony Stark owns Area 51.
- Stark despises J. R. R. Tolkien, the writer of the Lord of The Rings series.
- Stark suffers from depression.
- Forbes placed Tony Stark as #4 on their list of most wealthy fictional characters, citing a net worth of $12.4 billion.
Currently, Iron Man is in the middle of the AXIS event taking place in the Marvel Comic book universe. It has been revealed that Stark was tricked into creating technology that allowed the Red Skull to steal Professor Xavier's brain, allowing the villian to change the emotions of people all over the world.
